The other week we had one of our first thunderstorms of the spring. I know so many people love the thunder and rain. The soothing sounds of rain beating outside your window typically helps people to fall asleep and then sleep soundly.
Not for my girl, no. My youngest is terrified of thunderstorms. She hears the rain; she sees the flashes of lightning outside the window and her shoulders tense and her eyebrows furrow as she braces herself for the shudder of thunder that’s sure to follow each flash.
I was doing my best to soothe and calm her, which seemed to be in vain as she was getting more and more tense. When finally, I looked at her and in loving sincerity asked “Don’t you trust me? If I tell you that you’re safe right here in my arms, right here in our home – is that not enough? Do you trust me?”
She looked at me a little funny and thought about it for a good minute until finally said; “yes – I trust you”.
It was noticeable that her heart had calmed after that. Her shoulders relaxed and she went about getting ready for bed with no problems drifting off to sleep.
It made me pause, I wonder if that is what God is asking so many of us right now. “Do you trust me?”
We can see the storm happening outside, we’re preparing, tensing up and bracing ourselves for the shudder of the thunder that is sure to come. All the while God is holding us and asking “Do you trust me?”
He has promised to give our lives hope and a future – whatever that looks like, whatever comes tomorrow – for me, I am choosing to trust in the King of Kings, God almighty. Not because everything outside my home is calm. In fact, it is far from calm.
But I am choosing to trust God because he is a promise keeper. He is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow. He has promised that in this world we will have trouble. That is a promise we can see so clearly this week. But we don’t have to tense up and brace ourselves for the shudder, we can trust our Promise Keeper. We can have hope because he has also promised that he has overcome the world.
Scripture
