This is my first year attending the Northwestern Christian Writers Conference. I am just as excited as I am nervous. I am looking forward to all that I’ll learn from the industry experts. However, I’m definitely a little unsure of how to prepare for the 1:1 appointment.
The 1:1 appointment is one of the things that drew me to the Northwestern Christian Writers Conference. It’s a chance to sit down 1:1, face to face, with an industry expert. This is when you’ll have an opportunity to present your work and get feedback. It’s a frightening thought to be critiqued, but it is also the very best way to grow and learn!
If you’re like me, a new attendee in the all online platform this year, let’s discuss some helpful resources to get us ready! So that, we’re able to get the most out of our 1:1 appointment.
Deciding which industry expert is the best match for you
It is important to be intentional when deciding which 1:1 appointment(s) to sign up for. These tips will help to ensure that you get the most out of your time with these industry experts!
Step 1 : Determine Your Goals
Take time to think about the next steps YOU want to take as a writer. Make a prioritized list of the goals you’re hoping to achieve.
Step 2 : Research Faculty Profiles
Like you, each industry expert has specific things they’re looking for when going into their 1:1 meetings. Review their profiles to see whose expertise and interests best fit your goals. You can start researching the faculty members profiles by clicking this link HERE.
For example, I write non-fiction material and have interest in podcasts. I also have a social media platform. By looking over the faculty profiles I can see that for me, Mary DeMuth would be a good fit. Her profile states that she is an expert in the area of “Fiction, non-fiction, podcasting and platform”.
Another option for me would be to look at the profile of Megan Dobson. She is an industry expert in the areas of “Self-help, business narrative, non-fiction, memoir and Christian Living.” She has listed that she’s asking her appointments to bring with and present either a book proposal or a one sheet. This is a great indicator of not just how to prepare but what to prepare for your 1:1. I also appreciate that the profiles tell us what the industry expert is not looking for. We can quickly eliminate profiles from that section alone.
Registration
If you’re thinking “Whoa, but Monica I haven’t even registered yet!” That’s ok, there’s still time! You can still register for the now all online Northwestern Christian Writer’s Conference for a REDUCED rate by clicking HERE.
I am so excited to be attending the Conference this year! Even in an all online platform there will be fantastic industry leaders. These leaders are carefully selected to help you grow in your writing so that you’re able to achieve your writing goals. I can’t wait to “see” you there!
Stay tuned for more tips on how to get the most out of your 1:1 appointment.
